The Tour invades the Action Track of the East on Saturday, June 1, as they continue their 16-event championship battle with the J&R Precast 150. It’s the first and only stop at Seekonk for the Tour in 2024. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour invades Seekonk for the J&R Precast 150 this Saturday, June 1. The show will begin with qualifying at 5:30 p.m. and a special service for Carl “Bugsy” Stevens, a four-time Seekonk Speedway champion and also a historic NASCAR Modified champion, who passed away last week. Fans are encouraged to get to the track by 5 p.m. to make sure they do not miss the special ceremony. The J&R Precast 150 is proudly presented by local business J&R Precast. J&R Precast is a family-run precast concrete business that began operations in the late 1950s. Located in Berkley, they are proud to be a fourth generation business. Over the years, J&R Precast has grown consistently through a dedication to quality and a relentless commitment to customer service. As a result of this commitment to their customers, they are Southern New England’s premier precaster. The Tour heads into Seekonk with all drivers chasing Ron Silk in the standings. Silk has three victories in the first five Whelen Modified Tour events of the season at New Smyrna, Thompson and Riverhead. Other winners this season include three-time series champion Justin Bonsignore (Richmond) and Jake Johnson (Monadnock). Jake is familiar with Seekonk Speedway fans as a multiple-time champion in the Fast Friday Legends Cars division and feature winner in the Pro Stocks and Late Models, who has now gone Modified racing. Silk, Bonsignore and Johnson are just three of the contenders for Saturday night’s 150-lap affair. Defending event winner Matt Hirschman will also be in the field - always a threat to win. He dominated last year’s race, leading all 150 laps en route to the win. Two-time Seekonk Tour winner Doug Coby, who is also a Seekonk winner in Tour-Type Modified (non-NASCAR sanctioned) and Midget action, will also be in the field. Coby will drive the No. 44 for Tinio Racing, looking for his first win with that bunch. Fans should also keep an eye on names like Craig Lutz and Patrick Emerling, who enter the race fourth and fifth in the Whelen Modified Tour point standings. Rising star Austin Beers, Kyle Bonsignore, Trevor Catalano, Tyler Rypkema and Tommy Catalano are also expected to be contenders. In 11 previous NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races at Seekonk, 10 different drivers have been to Victory Lane. Will another new winner be added this time around? Also on the card, Seekonk’s Late Models open the Everett’s Auto Parts Triple Crown Series with a 50-lap feature, while both the Helger’s South Coast Power Equipment Sportsman and Chaz Auto Body Sport Trucks will run 25 laps. Seekonk Speedway is saddened to share the news that legendary short-track New England racer Carl “Bugsy” Stevens has passed away. The four-time Seekonk Speedway champion will be missed by all in the community. Driving his first race in 1957, Bugsy was born for auto racing. He rolled into the mid-1960s teaming with legendary car owner Lenny Boehler to drive the historic No. 3 “Ole Blue” machine and they had immediate success — winning championships and countless races. Stevens won titles at Seekonk Speedway, Thompson Speedway, Stafford Motor Speedway and many other tracks in New England. Not only was Stevens a Modified standout, he also competed in the NASCAR Cup Series back in 1970 - competing in three events in that season, scoring a best finish of sixth in what is now the Coca-Cola 600. Bugsy was also a competitor on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour once the modern era started in 1985, competing in three years of competition and 45 starts with multiple top-five finishes. Stevens not only drove for Boehler, but also historic car owner Joe Brady, winning championships at Westboro Speedway and Seekonk. Perhaps even more important than his driving ability, Bugsy’s smile and personality made him a fan favorite. Stevens is a member of the New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame (Class of 1998) and the Seekonk Speedway Wall of Fame. One of Seekonk’s all-time most popular drivers, Bugsy won three NASCAR National Modified championships. If there was ever a driver that could capture the eyes and hearts of the youth, Bugsy was the one. Seekonk Speedway officials have decided to cancel NASCAR racing on Saturday, May 18, due to inclement weather expected during the day. The Sport Truck Everett’s Auto Parts Triple Crown opener will now be run on June 8. The Pro Stock Everett’s Triple Crown opener has been moved to June 15. Military Night has also been moved to June 15. Tickets for the May 18 event will be honored June 15th Seekonk Speedway’s Fast Friday will open on Friday, May 24. NASCAR divisions will be back on track on Saturday, June 1, except the Pro Stocks, who will be back on track on June 8.
