BARRY SHAW PULLS AWAY FROM THE PACK, OPENS SPORT TRUCK SEASON WITH WIN

BY ADAM BELUE

SEEKONK, Mass. — Barry Shaw Jr. started 2021 in the same manner that he began the 2019 season, scoring a victory in the Chaz Auto Body Sport Trucks feature race on opening day at Seekonk Speedway.

Shaw led 20 of the 25 laps, beginning the feature in third position, sitting in row two behind polesitter Mike Cavallaro and Brittany Campbell, but wasted little time to take over second place from the Somerset, MA native. Shaw began to pressure Cavallaro for the top spot during lap four, making a move to the outside that gave him first place at the stripe to start the fifth lap. Shaw, Cavallaro, and rookie Amy Arsenault separated themselves from the rest of the field early on, with Shaw stretching out to a lead of nearly a second after 10 laps.

A nearly two-second gap between first and second place was quickly erased at the midway point of the race, as a yellow flag from Campbell spinning out and stopping on the infield grass brought the field back together again. A similar trio of racers – Shaw, Cavallaro, and Arsenault – used solid restarts to retain their spots in the top three, with Rick Martin and Richie Murray rounding out the top five. Arsenault was denied a podium spot by Martin and Murray during the tail end of the race, with Martin’s attempt to track down Cavallaro for second place coming up just short.

Martin settled for third, with Murray finishing fourth and Arsenault claiming fifth in an impressive showing for the rookie from nearby Swansea, MA. Positions six through ten were held by Lenny Guy, Campbell, Ethan Heilborn, Johnny Silva, and Len Sousa.

The Chaz Auto Body Sport Trucks will open the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown Series season on Saturday, May 8, with a 35-lap feature as part of the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series.
