Sim’s Saturday Night Recap 6.28.14

DARLING CAPTURES PRO STOCK WIN Ryan Vanasse and Dave Darling spent 30 of the 40 laps in their feature contesting with each other, Darling taking over from Tom Scully, Sr. after Scully was battered in a lap ten crash. Darling had the pole on the restart and Vanasse was at his shoulder. Darling got away clean and Vanasse settled in to snipe at the leader constantly. He grabbed the lead at the midpoint of the race with an underneath move. Darling’s attempt to cross under was rebuffed by Vanasse, who set out to put some distance between them. He was able to put a few cars, but Darling pursued doggedly and as they crossed the stripe, Vanassed had a .520-second lead. Unfortunately, Vanasse’s win fell to post-race inspection and his win was disqualified, elevating Darling to the win. Fred Astle, Jr, who won last week, was second, followed by Angelo Belsito, Kevin Folan and Kyle Casper. Folan and the senior Scully shared the front row and Scully leapt off the pole to the front after a brief duel to turn two. Craig Weinstein got under Folan and Darling moved below Dick Houlihan for some door-to-door running. A lap later, Weinstein was alone in second, Darling was working under Folan and now Houlihan was contending with Vanasse. Vanasse moved under Folan as Darling grabbed third alone. Ryan Lineham followed Vanasse, getting beneath Folan as the former moved to fourth. By lap 6, Weinstein was trying to push in under Scully. Vanasse went past Darling on lap 9, then Darling went outside, took it back and began to go around Weinstein.... read more

Friday Night Recap 6.27.14

DEBBIS STAYS ON WINNING TRACK IN 600’S Derek Debbis stayed with his winning ways in the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown race for SYRA 600 cars with a strong climb through the pack to pass leader Cassie Meservey at the two-thirds point of the race. He then held off an insistent Anthony Marvin following a lap 17 restart, receiving a little assistance from Scott Serydynski, Jr. Serydynski came up to challenge alongside Marvin over the final three laps but had to settle for third. Michael Toner and Eric LeBrun completed the top five. As Meservey outran Tim Ouellette at the outset for the lead, Debbis took a big leap from eighth to fifth, passing Eric and Luke LeBrun plus Toner. Meservey moved away as Oullette settled in. Debbis passed Serydynski on lap two and set out after Marvin, getting underneath on lap four then going into third on Marvin’s rear bumper. Serydynski settled into fifth with Marvin in fourth. They pursued through the middle part of the race with Toner backing them up. Debbis hunted down Oullette for seven laps, catching him just after the midpoint of the feature. On lap nine, he looked underneath, only to find the door slammed in his face. He looked to the outside and began coming on. He had his nose by on lap eleven and Oullette got loose in the following circuit and Debbis vaulted into second behind Meservey. He immediately went after Meservey and she replied with a staunch defense. Debbis went to the outside and they dueled for the lead. By lap 16, he had the lead on the outside and... read more

Sim’s Saturday 6.21 Recap

6-21-14 Saturday Night, Summer Solstice FAST FRED RUNS THE FRONT – THE WHOLE 65 LAPS Fred Astle Jr. jealously guarded the lead, which he grabbed right off the pole, for the entire Pro Stock division race. Assuaging the bad luck that fate had sent him on previous evenings, he ran away from the field on each of the three cautions, including a green-white-checker on the sixty-third lap of the Brad Scott Memorial to haul down the double points on the laps-added feature. This was also the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown race. Fred was hooked up and driving straight and it seemed nothing could touch him, though Craig Weinstein and then Mike Brightman worked mightily from second place to reel him in. Astle would have none of it and continuously added to his lead. On the final restart with two laps remaining, he was equal to the task and pulled rapidly away from Brightman, who was on his outside. Mike chose to drop into second, just ahead of Kevin Casper, who had edged Weinstein out of third five laps earlier. Rick Martin also got by Weinstein on the restart for fourth, while Ryan Vanasse drove past Bob Hussey and Weinstein , grabbing the fifth spot at the finish. Most of the passing had been accomplished by lap ten. Dick Houlihan, who had started 20th made the most of the moment, moving up to eleventh, behind Martin, who was recovering from a bad start which saw him slide from eighth to thirteenth before he was able to gather the car in. But Kevin Folan got crossed up in the pack and... read more

6.20 Fast Friday Recap

6-20-14 Fast Fridays LASCUOLA OUTLASTS LAMOTH TO CHECKERS IN LEGENDS The irrepressible Nick Lascuola continued his winning ways in Legends with a run to the checkers making him undefeated on the early part of the season. This time, however, he had the returning Jordan Lamoth shadowing him the distance, then closing in at the end for a crowd-pleaser of a finish. John O’Sullivan ran a strong race for a third and divisional rookie Jesse Melberg’s fourth place proved he is mastering his new ride after stepping over from Pure Stocks last season. Matthew Carpenter ran near the front all night, bringing home a big fifth. The top-ten finishers were established by the halfway point in the 30-lap extended feature which was both a regional qualifier for the Legends national race, slated for Las Vegas and the first stop on the Phil’s Propane triple crown for the division. Lascuola started twelfth and made great leaps toward the front: going to seventh on the first circuit and to third on the second. He trailed leaders Chris Robbins and Lamoth until a lap six restart, when he zoomed to the outside and to the front. Robbins had suffered mechanic al failure which spun him to bring the caution, and his car had to be wreckered to the pits. By lap eight, Lascuola, Lamoth and O’Sullivan were nose-to-tail and rocketing away from the field. The chase pack was led by Melberg, Andrew and Matthew Carpenter and Colin Healy. Healy had come from the back after losing his right rear fender, backing into the backstretch wall following a turn two spin. He would go... read more
