Opening Weekend Preview With Kyle Souza
After a long, cold, winter, Seekonk Speedway is set to open the 2018 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season this weekend. There will be action on the third-mile both Saturday and Sunday, but the motors on the track won’t be the only thing taking place.
Saturday, continuing a tradition that has being going on for years, the 7th annual Show & Go Car Show will take place in the parking lot. The event always showcases some of the best antique, and modern, cars from across New England and it provides fans an opportunity to take a look into the past and a deeper look at the present.
The show will be hosted by Mass Cruisers and there will be entertainment provided by Crusin Bruce Palmer. At 1 p.m., there will be a small burnout drags event on the race track for fans to enjoy.
While you attend the car show, you can check out the Seekonk NASCAR divisions in their final test and tune of the season for no charge at the front gate. All you have to do is show up, walk through the gate and sit and watch the Pro Stocks, Late Models, Sports Trucks and Sportsman make their final adjustments before the season gets underway.
Sunday, as the 2018 season revs up, the four divisions will practice at 11 a.m., and begin their quest for the championship at 1 p.m., when the Pro Stocks run their annual Time Trials. Shortly after, qualifying races get underway at 2 p.m., with the Sports Trucks scheduled as the first division on the track.
After qualifying, the first feature racing of the season takes place, and fans will catch a little bit of extra action on Opening Day. The Pro Stocks will compete in their first Tomassi Law Associates Power 5 race, scheduled for 45 laps.
The Late Models will run a Power 5 race at a 35 lap distance, while the Southcoast Power Equipment Power 5 race will be 30 laps for the Sportsman, and the Sports Trucks will start with a 30 lap affair.
The winter is finally over, and race cars have already hit the track across Connecticut this season. Now, it’s time for the Massachusetts racing community to open the new campaign. Don’t miss it!
