Bobby Pelland III jumped off the outside pole into the lead of a Late Model race which ran from start to finish without caution. Points leader Bill Bernard took over second halfway through and hounded him to the finish line. Jeramee Lillie and Gerry DeGasparre, Jr. waged war over third, with DeGasparre winning the duel. Last week’s winner, Dave Hutchins, Jr. rounded out the top five.
After Pelland had leapt away from polesitter Ron Barboza, Jr., the contest fell to the rest of the field, and Lillie quickly took over third to harry Barboza over second for the first seven circuits. Bernard moed up from sixth, got past Ryan Lineham to challenge Barboza for third, taking over on lap nine. Four laps later, he got by Lillie into the runnerup slot. But Pelland was having the his best night of the current season, and had a full straightaway lead over the field.
DeGasparre had now followed in to Lillie’s bumper and began to make life uneasy for The Hammer. They went door-to-door down the backstretch on lap 17 and they fought bitterly until DeGasparre edged a fender out going into lap 19. Lap 20 saw Bernard still unable to lessen the distance to Pelland as the leader continued to fly solo at the front. Lillie was at DeGasparre’s back bumper.
With five to go, a persistent Bernard had been able to eke Pelland’s lead down to about 12 carlengths. Another broad gap back to the war zone between DeGasparre and Lillie and then Hutchins held fifth, ahead of Barboza and Lineham.
Pelland cleared across the line a second and a half ahead of Bernard. He commanded not only the winner’s trophy but best time of the day with a 13.416-second lap, just under runerup Bernard’s 13.432.
Filling out the field were: Barboza, Lineham, Dylan Estrella, Joe Kohler, Tyler Thompson and Mike Marfeo.
